PANCHANG
Panchang is the in-detailed calendar followed by Hindus. It utilizes the factors provided by traditional Vedic scriptures to compile information relevant to astrology. This is used as a reference to forecast celestial positions, demarcate auspicious and enigmatic time periods and so on. This is essential for planning any prominent ceremony or event such as marriage, start of a career or travel.
Panchang is derived from two words ‘Panch’ which translates to five and ‘Ang’ which means ‘limbs’. This intricate almanac is created to be referred to while planning one’s daily schedule. It helps people make the best use of ‘subh muhurtha’ in order to yield optimum results. It also helps an individual avoid the inauspicious timings in order to have a fruitful day. Panchangs aids in planning significant events and functions. It is in accordance with the alignments of the heavenly bodies in an individual’s astrological chart.
The Panchang also helps in forming the Vedic birth chart. The calculations are done with reference to the movements of the planets and stars. This can help explain how certain transitions can influence a person on a certain date and time. It is also used to estimate tithi, vaar, yog, karan and nakshatra. These are considered to be the five pillars of traditional Hindu timekeeping. Vaar translates to week; tithi is the lunar day; and constellation is in reference to nakshatra.
A basic understanding of Rashi Phal is required to study Panchang. This helps determine the influence of each of the twelve zodiac signs on a person’s day. The making of the Panchag requires in depth knowledge of astrology paired with extensive mathematical formulation. It is to be noted that practically, the short-cut formulations are used as proposed by ancient Vedic scholars.
